2017 Lansum International Choir Competition

Rules

 

The 2017 Lansum International Choir Competition will take place on August 1-3, 2017, in the beautiful college campus of Claremont Colleges, city of Claremont, which is located in the great Los Angeles area, California, USA. The Choir Competition is open to the organized groups of singers of all nationalities.

 

1. Application Requirement

Each choir is required to submit the application form together with the below material before or on June 30, 2017:

  • A Completed Application Form
  • A recent performance recording of the choir via YouTube or other uploaded performance links
  • A short essay introducing the choir and conductor, like music activities and achievements in the recent two years
  • Two recent photos of the choir and the conductor
  • A list of the names of the choir members, age, and other information ( as page 4 of application).

 

2. Application Date & Fee

Completed application must be postmarked on or before June 30, 2017 

  • Each choir administration fee: $180 / choir
  • Each additional category competition fee: $150/ category/ choir 
  • Each participant application fee: $25/ person, including all categories competition fee, document fee, opening and closing concert ceremony participation (Except scholarship students)
  • Applications postmarked After June 30, 2017 will be assessed an additional $30 late application fee.

 

3. Competition Round

The Competition consists of a Qualifying round and a Final round.

I. Qualifying Round (by current email with the link of YouTube or other uploaded performance links. )

The recording should be the same pieces which will be played in the final live competition round. Performance link should be labeled with the title of the piece(s) and composer name(s) in the order of performance, with exact time of each composition.

List of choirs who entered the final round will be posted on the website. Accepted choirs should come to the opening ceremony on August 1, 2017 to listen to the important announcement.

II. Final Live Competition Round

The program should be the same as the pieces played in the Qualifying round.

Final results will be posted on the website.

All winners must be present at the Award Ceremony and Winners Concert on August 3, 2017. 

 

4. Choir Competition Categories

The 2017 Lansum International Choir Competition has three categories:

5. Performance Time

The competition performance stage time is 15 minute limit, including setup time, breakdown, sound check, and performance time.

 

6. Repertoire Requirement

The repertoires in all categories are free choices.

It should include works form:

  •  Classical Music:

a)     Baroque (16th century – mid 18th century)

b)     Classicism (18th century)

c)     Romanticism (19th century)

  • Contemporary Music​​
  • Folksongs:  home countries or foreign countries
  • Sacred or Gospel church music

 

7. Competition Scoring - Evaluation 100%

a) Technical ( rhythm, articulation and sound ) – 20 %

b)  Intonation - 20%

c)  Interpretation - 20%

d)  Musical – 20%

e)  Expression, and overall impression – 20%

 

8. International Contestants

International applicants should consult with the nearest American Embassy or Consulate for visas. The Lansum International Choir Competition committee will send an official letter of invitation. The official invitation letter will be sent via e-mail, and the original copy will be sent by regular mail. Express mail can be requested for an additional $20. The official letters will only be provided to the applicant after his or her application has been completed and accepted.

 

9. Jury

The jury has the right to stop the contestants during the performance if the playing time is expanded or in any other necessary cases.

The juror is not permitted to evaluate a student of his or her own.

The decisions of the jury on the Qualifying round and the Final round will be final.

 

10. Winner's Award

All winners must be present in the Awards Ceremony and Winners Concert in order to receive the awards.

The 1st prize winner in each category will perform in the Winner’s Concert.
